Legal protection

Legal Protection policies normally insure you for between £50,000 and £100,000 worth of solicitors fees. If you are involved in an accident that is not your fault, the legal protection policy will act on your behalf to claim for any losses you might have incurred as a result of the accident, i.e. personal injury, any excess that you have on your policy, hired car etc.

In reality, the legal protection company will normally only spend time and money on a ‘cast iron’ claim where they know they will have a strong case to recover their costs, which can be several thousand pounds, from the person at fault or their Insurers. Subsequently, these companies rarely incur costs to themselves, and they make money from the fees that they recover.

It is easy to see why these policies have become so prevalent in the last 15 years or so. They are fantastically profitable to the insurance company/intermediary that sells them, as they enjoy huge commissions from the legal protection companies. Understandably, they will take every opportunity to sell these ultra-profitable policies.

Prices vary enormously, from £5.99 with Best Advice UK to an incredible £30 with Kwik Fit.
